Marrakech - The Moroccan government has developed a plan to privatize some of the Kingdom’s historical monuments, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

In the wake of the Ministry of Culture failing to achieve gains, private companies will invest in the financial management of these historic sites and buildings without compromising or impacting their structure.

“Direct management has not lived up to expectations: the Administration has neither the promotion tools nor the international experience,” Mohamed Lotfi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture was quoted by the same source as saying.

The privatization process will include three historic sites in Marrakesh, including the graves of Saadiyin, where Sultans of the dynasty were buried between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The privatization will also include the two palaces of El-Bahia and El-Badia, which received more than a million visitors last year, both Moroccan and foreign, and added MAD 12.4 million to state coffers.

The nomination is also open to foreign contractors interested in the cultural domain, until September 14. The contract imposes the maintenance and upkeep of historical sites, as well as the allocation of 35 percent of each ticket price for the benefit of the Ministry of Culture.

The potential visitor must be reminded that the price is very low compared to those in European countries.
