The Carmen Opera

By Nada Afa

Rabat - The Carmen Opera will take place in Mohammed V theatre in April. The Philharmonic Choir of Morocco will be staged by Jean-Marc Biksup and directed by Olivier Holt.

Carmen, composed by French composer Georges Bizet and written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Based on the novella “Carmen” by Prosper Mérimée, it tells the story of Carmen, a provocative gypsy living in Seville, Spain.  Carmen features many well known medlies, such as the prelude “Habanera” and “Toreador song”. Although Carmen is lauded as one of the best Opera’s of all time, it was not well received when it was first performed in Paris in 1875, maily due to its shocking plot and complex characters.

On April 14th at 6:00pm, there will be a general rehearsal reserved to schools and students. The gala evening and premiere of the Opera will take place on the 16th at 7:30pm. As for the 17th at 5:00pm and 19th at 8pm, a public performance will take place.

The prices are as follows:

Public Orchestra – 350 MAD.

Balcony 1- 250 MAD.

This is an opportunity to see one of the most renowned Operas in the world and witness the talent of Morocco’s Philharmonic Choir. The choir is also active during many other events throughout the year, like Ballets and classical music Concerts.
