Rabat - Human Rights Thursday is an event organized by Association of Mediterranean’s Meetings of Culture and Human Rights (ARMCDH), and hosted by 7ème art cinema in Rabat.
Founded in 2010, ARMCDH is an organization whose mission is to promote the culture of human rights through cinematographic works. Besides “Human Rights Thursday” ARMCDH also organizes other events, such as “Children’s Morning” and a multitude of Master Classes in the city of Rabat.
This Thursday, the cinema will screen Leyla Bouzid’s latest film “As I open my eyes”. Leyla Bouzid is a Tunisian screenwriter and film director who studied literature at the renowned French university La Sorbonne.
Bouzid went on to complete her studies in La Fémis, a French state film school. Bouzid is known for her ambition, but also for her immense talent. “As I Open My Eyes” is 2015 French-Tunisian drama film, and Bouzid’s very first feature.
This film was not only screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, but was also selected to play at various festivals.
It was screened during the Venice film festival, the Carthage film festival, the International Festival of Young Filmmakers of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur, and at the International Film Festival of Dubai. Bouzid’s film received excellent reviews, and a positive feedback internationally.
The film follows the story of a girl named Farah, and her journey of self discovery in Tunisia, a country where taboos and prohibitions are endless and where you’re judged for every decision you make. It takes place during the summer of 2010, just before the start of the Jasmine Revolution.
Right after graduating high school, Farah joins a rock band as their lead singer. Her parents hope to see her follow a great professional path that will lead her to an excellent medical career. Unfortunately for her parents, Farah doesn’t share their view of her future. She continues to sing and rebel even as the police begin to follow and moniter her movements.
Farah doesn’t want to give up on music, as it’s the only thing that makes her feel alive, vibrant, and inspired.
This Thursday is the ideal opportunity to watch this thought provoking film and to participate in the debate that follows the screening. As always, the price is lowered to MAD 10 to encourage a larger audience to attend. The film screening will start at 6pm, at cinema 7ème art, this April 28th.
