Yves Saint Laurent Museum to Open in Morocco

Rabat - Studio KO founders Olivier Marty and Karl Fournier unveiled the first design plans for the new Yves Saint Laurent museum that will open in Marrakech, Morocco, in the autumn of 2017.

The new museum will host the work of the iconic French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Paris collection.

The new structure will be built next to the wonderful garden “Jardin Majorelle,” a property co-owned by Saint Laurent, where his ashes were scattered after his death in 2008.

According to the Design Boom, the museum will feature a temporary exhibition space, a 130-seat auditorium, a bookshop and a research library that will focus on literature, botany, Berber culture, poetry and history.

The museum will also have a cafe-restaurant with a terrace.

Inside the building there will be a vast collection of YSL goodies, such as 5,000 clothing pieces and 15,000 haute couture accessories, as well as tens of thousands of sketches and assorted objects, all currently archived in Paris.

The same source added that the building’s exterior will have a look of cubic forms adorned with bricks that create a pattern resembling threads of fabric.

“The contrasting interior has been conceived like the lining of a luxurious couture jacket: luminous, velvety, and smooth,” the source said, adding that it will be built of “terracotta, an earthen colored terrazzo with stone fragments.”

"We designed the building like one would cut fabric for a dress, by composing curves and lines, in the fashion of the working drawings, white traced on black paper that we discovered in the designer's workshop and archives. Its façades would be wrapped in a brick trim, like a drape, a throw, a cape," said the architects.
